ESG considerations in fund financing

May 2021 - Avardi Partners detailed the latest trends around ESG-linked fund financing facilities in an article in the drawdown

"Sustainability financing is largely falling into two categories:

  • The first is green loans; this is where the proceeds of the loan are applied exclusively to finance green assets in line with the ESG strategy of a fund. These facilities can benefit from a pricing reduction from day one subject to the fund following the framework agreed in the facility agreement. Green loans are typically more suited for funds focused on investing in green assets only (e.g. renewable energy or sustainable forestry).

  • The second is ESG or sustainability-linked loans. These facilities are standard capital call or NAV facilities but include ESG-related KPIs agreed between the fund and the lender. The achievement of some or all of these KPIs is linked to a pricing toggle. This is the most common type of sustainability financing in the fund finance market."

Sarah Lobbardi launches Avardi Partners

April 2021 - Sarah Lobbardi discussed in an article in the Drawdown the launch of Avardi Partners.

“Back in 2018, I launched the first ever dedicated fund finance advisory team. I could see the gap in the market between sponsors and lenders. That’s when I decided there was something to be done to add more value. There was an opportunity to help sponsors to be more innovative about their financing strategy and structuring” Lobbardi explained.

“I am really happy today to launch an independent practice that will focus on fund finance as well as provide a full range of services to our clients. Our six strong team has a longstanding track record in fund finance having executed over 250 transactions worldwide.”

In the last few years, the fund finance landscape has evolved rapidly and recent events have led to an ever sharper focus on this market. “Our launch is timely as sourcing financing solutions is harder than ever. Lenders are more diligent, pricing has increased materially and there is a massive spike in NAV line demands with only few lenders providing them,” Lobbardi added.
